Hi Suzy, I realise this is an old question. My view is transformations are best done closer to the source where needed. I can’t say if you “need” these transformations, but if you do, then do them in the source system first (if possible), then PQ, then PP. Have a read of Chris Webb’s article on one ...

I don't really understand, but you may find this article I wrote a couple of weeks ago useful - it seems like the principles are similar. You may be able to work it out from there.

Interesting problem. It is hard for me to give you clear advice on this despite the detail you have provided. Power Pivot is great for working over large tables of data.
