Calendar Table & Mark as Date Table

Postby jg8ok » Sat Mar 25, 2017 12:18 am

Hi -

I currently have access to Power BI Desktop and regular Excel, but NOT the PowerPivot add-in for Excel. I have setup a calendar table with relationships to other data tables in Power BI and they are all linked to the "Full Date" column in the calendar table. I have noticed there is no option to select "Mark as Date Table" for the calendar table in Power BI. Will this cause any issues? Everything appears to be working correctly when pulling data by different dates, but will this malfunction since I wasn't able to "Mark as Date Table" in Excel first? Thanks for your time!

Mark as date table is only required if you join your data table to a date table using a surrogate key. If you use a date column it is not required. Power BI does not support joining a calendar table to a data table using a surrogate key hence there is no "mark as date table" button. Technically you can join with a surrogate key but built in time Intelligence won't work unless you use a date column

Matt -

Thanks for your help! I can now stop worrying about whether the calendar table is working properly!
