Power BI Recommendations

Postby leimst » Fri Jul 31, 2015 6:20 am

Hello,

I am looking for distinctions between Professional Plus 2013, Office 365 and various offerings within the Power BI stack. In particular, I suspect that some options will not be viable in my case due to data security...the company that I work for will not allow any data to be saved to OneDrive, PowerBI.com or any other "cloud" scenario. From what I can tell, PowerBI.com saves all work to the cloud as does Office 365? If that is in fact the case, then I'm thinking that I am left with Professional Plus 2013 as my only option? That way, all data sources, data models, reports and dashboards created are kept and housed on-premises.

Any corrections to the above or additional insights would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Most of your statements are correct, but o365 is not a cloud hosted solution. It is a subscription version of the desktop software delivered via the Internet. One you have it and install it, it is the same as professional plus. There is one drive and share point online that come with it, but you don't have to use these. So professional plus and o365 are both going to meet your needs.

A I wrote a good blog this week which talks about cloud v desktop http://www.powerpivotpro.com/2015/07/po ... l-rematch/. Slightly different topic, but has some useful info.

I keep a knowledge base of info including which versions ship with Power Pivot here. http://exceleratorbi.com.au/which-versi ... wer-pivot/

Thank you for your insight on this Matt. It looks like I'm stuck in the Professional Plus sandbox where it looks like Power Map 3D is "preview" only and will not be getting any additional updates like tree map whereas Office 365 will receive Power Map updates I believe. My challenges seem to be getting access to the best visualization tools while also being able to share / publish without having to utilize the cloud.

Thanks again for all you do,

Interesting - I didn't realise there was a difference with what Power Map you got. I just checked and found this https://support.office.com/en-us/Articl ... 0e82472d74

Tree Map on the other hand is not a Power Map tool but a new Excel 2016 tool. Unless you mean something other than this https://support.office.com/en-au/articl ... 2d5c624b68
