PQ or PP for joins??

Postby mitchandsuzy » Mon May 07, 2018 1:49 pm

Hi All,

As I sit here waiting for my Power pivot data refresh to update I am wondering if I should really be doing all the data manipulation in Power Query.

I created several tables to translate keys to the full description in PP eg 2074 ---> Ku-ring-gai Council etc and I use the relationships to provide data in the reports created via the pivot tables.

I have 18 tables some with 140,000 rows all index tables less than 100 rows.

(40 mins and still updating!)

Does anyone have an opinion regarding this??

Kind Regards
Suzy.

Hi Suzy, I realise this is an old question. My view is transformations are best done closer to the source where needed. I can’t say if you “need” these transformations, but if you do, then do them in the source system first (if possible), then PQ, then PP.

Have a read of Chris Webb’s article on one performance tuning opportunity. https://blog.crossjoin.co.uk/2018/03/16 ... transform/
