P.S. I have also tried changing the date format by selecting the cell, right clicking and trying to change the formatting. the format of the cell is recognised as a date but does not change to any other date formatting

Thanks for your reply. I had tested it on a 100 row table (after several failures) which had worked OK but not for the larger table. I have watched your video and the then tried your technique. The table loaded in less than 20 seconds - 86,000 rows as expected

I had the same problem and your solution is correct - the pivot table was not connected. Why does this need to be done manually ?
