Thought I'd kick off a topic here. I've used =index() a reasonable amount over the years but have never really fully appreciated how awesome it is until I stumbled across this post:

Thanks for the great link Dave. I never cease to be astounded by some people and here deep deep understanding of some topics. Index/Match is something I have heard a lot about in forums, and they all say Index/Match is far superior to vlookup. I have always had trouble getting used to the index/match syntax. But what I discovered a few weeks ago is that if you write the formulae back to front (ie start from the inside and work out) it is MUCH easier to get your head around. So what I do now is first write the Match() formula and save that. Then I wrap that in an Index() formula. If you do it that way, it is easy.

What do others think of index/match vs vlookup?

One of my most used functions.

I stumbled across INDEX() and MATCH() a few years ago and have found the combination invaluable ever since - cCan take a bit of getting used to though.
