I have Office 2016 Professional and i was wondering if I should convert to Office 365 so I can get a personal Power BI log in. Is there any functional difference between Office 2016 Pro and Office 365?

The second question is there any easy (read free) transfer from Office Pro to Office 365?

When you say Office 2016 Professional, I assume you have a boxed version that you have paid for already. There is no way to trade this in for O365. I assume you also mean you have this at home, not work. Functionally the software is the same, however O365 should get bug fixes and enhancements sooner.

The cheapest way I know to get a personal Power BI account is to buy a domain (any domain) and set up a new email address. You can do it from there. A domain will cost around $20 per year depending on the domain and where you buy it. From there you can get a free Power BI account or use the 60 day pro trial service.

Thanks Matt, seems silly that there isn't an upgrade path from the old disc/web update Office to the new (and future direction) Office.

I think this is the same with virtually all software. Once you open the box they won't give you the money back.

Usually, the Office 2016 (add any year over here) is a static version of the then-current Office 365 service.
Office 365 is a subscription-based product and Office 2016 is a one-time buy product.
A scalability is an option in Office 365 which Office 2016 lacks.
There'll be no future updates to Office 2016 other than Office 2019.
Microsoft rolls out newer updates to Office 365 as soon as they are good to go.
These are the basic differences.

I prefer office 365 because it has updates which help in the typing. Also office 365 has more templates that a person can use.

Microsoft 365 is the world's standard for office suites and the only one that’s equally powerful online and on the desktop. Despite a few glitches, nothing else comes close in power, flexibility, or ease of use.
