Using Measures in Columns: one approach works; one does not

My 1st post here & hope what I am submitting makes sense. See small attached .pbix and I think this will become more clear.

Why do the adjusted x, y columns (xAdjByMeas, yAdjByMeas) that use the measures (xMeasAdj, yMeasAdj) work here? As expected the adjusted x, y columns (xAdjyByWhatIf, yAdjByWhatIf) do not work with What-If measure values (xWhatIfMeas Value, yWhatIfMeas Value)?

I am dealing with x, y data used in scatter plots. Users currently adjust the data by a multiplicative factor that applies to all of x or all of y in a column. Currently they change in Power BI Desktop a column to do this which works fine. But I have two example adjustments using measures: one works; one does not. I understand why one does not work, but do not understand why the other works.
