Best approach to building a data warehouse?

Postby Yodee » Sun Apr 22, 2018 7:01 pm

We are building a Business Intelligence Dashboards serving SMB's, merging data from various services like Google Analytics, Google Webmaster Tools and Bing Webmaster Tools. We have already made a template using Power BI, and the same will be applied to serving rich dashboard to our subscribers.

However, one question is bothering us:

1. Should we pool all the customers data in the same big database, with each row having a column classifying data per customer?

2. Should we create a fresh database for each new subscriber we acquire for our service?

In Power BI, it is possible to connect to different data sources, combine the data, shape the data, do the data modelling, analysis and reporting.
Note that in Power BI, there will be only one data model. The data model will have lookup tables and data tables.
The best way to organize data in Power BI data model is - have all the customers information in customers table. One and only one row per customer with the columns containing the required information about the customer.
Then, you can have all the data that you gather for the customers from various sources in a data table. In data table, you can have any number of rows for each customer.
You will have customer number for each customer in the customers lookup table, which you refer in the data table. And, using this customer number you will connect the data table with the customers table defining a relationship.
