Laptop specs

Postby PhilC » Thu Aug 10, 2017 12:22 pm

Hi Matt,

Do you have an opinion on what specs are needed for a laptop to use for developing Power BI / Power Pivot models?

Can you share what machine you are using or lusting after to use?

Cheers
Phil

I have been thinking about blogging about this (which I will do). In short.

Go for
fast processor speed >=3ghz is best and most important
multi core (core 4 or above)
>=8GB memory with fast and plenty of L2 and L3 cache. Not all memory is the same. Faster memory is better

Not so important (prefer the items above)
SSD not important (only for file opening speed). It will have no impact on speed of usage of your work/reports.
i5 or i7 is not a major factor

Note. Always make sure you PC is running on "best performance" and doesn't have power saving turned on (if you want best performance)

Hi Matt, do you think it's worth waiting for laptops with new Coffee Lake 6-8 core processors or will older geneneration ones still do the trick?

I think current laptops are just fine for any well shaped data model up to about 100 million rows of data.
